Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, and it’s one of the biggest and most popular cities in Australia. It’s famous not just for its great tourist attractions and the Royal Botanic Garden, but also for the famous Sydney Opera House, recognizable all over the world.

Sydney, a Harbor City with So Much to See

Sydney is full of amazing things to do. People come from all over the world to see the wonders of this Australian city, including its incredible beaches. One of the most popular beaches in Sydney is Palm Beach, which is just an hour drive along the A8 coastal road. Palm Beach is surrounded by the city’s wealthy suburbs, and its expansive sands are the perfect place to spend a lazy day. The Grand Pacific Drive is also one of the most famous road trips in the world, and it runs right through Sydney.

There’s also Bondi Beach, a 1km-long stretch of golden sands. To the south of the beach you’ll find the Bondi Icebergs, and to the north there’s Ben Buckler, a trendy, urban locality to the East of Sydney.

Food lovers will be impressed, too. Just like in Britain, Australians love fish and chips – so you’ll find plenty of shops where you can try some of the freshest and most delicious fish in the country. Sydney is also home to a range of famous restaurants, which not only serve great Australian barbeque, but food from all over the world. Chinese and Thai restaurants are commonplace, serving up authentic Eastern food that’s hard to find in the United States or Europe.

Probably the biggest attraction is the Opera House, which dominates the skyline of the harbor. It’s a modern architectural wonder that was designed in 1966 by architect Jorn Ultzon. In 1999, further changes were made to the building, creating the fin-like design it has today. It’s home to some of the biggest theater productions throughout the year, and proves a popular destination both for Australians and tourists from all over the globe. The rest of the harbor has plenty to offer as well.

Over thousands of years, Mother Nature carved the Sydney harbor out of the sandstone, and today it features working docklands, an array of beaches, and real estate development that has gradually appeared over the last two centuries. From apartment buildings and stores, to luxury hotels and vacation resorts, Sydney harbor literally has something for everybody.

Close to the Sydney Harbor, you’ll also find the Royal Botanic Gardens. The gardens were opened in 1816, and to this day visitors can find stunning exotic and native plants. The gardens are the oldest scientific institution in the country, and within them you’ll find a music school and an art gallery that displays Australian and other artwork from around the world.

There’s even a zoo in Sydney, comprising of more than 75 acres of bushland that overlooks the Sydney Harbor. There are 380 species of animal in the Toronga Zoo, and more than 2,200 animals overall. There are numerous enclosures dedicated to native Australian animals that are not found anywhere else in the world, giving people the opportunity to experience wildlife like they’ve never seen before. The commitment to animal care at the Toronga Zoo means that exhibits display animals in their natural environments.
