The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the United States. Its economy is the fifth largest in the country and it is home to the third-largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the nation. When people say things are "Bigger in Texas", chances are they are talking about Dallas.

But Dallas earned the right to be the metropolis it is today – beginning as a logistically convenient railroad stop for cotton, steel, and later, oil, it blossomed into one of the country's most powerful job creators. The city is the heart of American industry and home to the headquarters of some of the most powerful names in the energy, finance, tech, communications, retail, food, and beverage industries.

Statistically, visitors to Texas are most likely coming for business purposes – it is the third most popular destination for business travel in the United States. The Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center is the world's largest column-free exhibit hall, booked year-round for trade conventions from all corners of global industry.

All of these factors make Dallas a powerful attraction for arts and entertainment. It is home to largest contiguous arts district in the United States, the largest zoo in Texas, the largest urban hardwood forest in the United States, and one of the largest medical facilities in the world. As the saying goes – everything is bigger in Texas.

The climate in Dallas is skewed towards very hot, humid summers and pleasantly mild winters. Located at the southern end of the American Midwest's Tornado Alley, it can also suffer from extreme weather from early spring to mid-summer.

The airport itself is separated into five separate terminals with a broad range of shops, restaurants and convenience stores located inside each. Travelers have access to a dizzying number of clubs and lounges, the most accessible of which is The Club at DFW located in Terminal D.

Getting Around in Dallas

Dallas is a city designed for cars, and renting one is highly recommended. You can easily rent directly from the airport, but you will want to spend some time getting familiar with a map before taking off.

With an airport the size of DFW, you'll need to pay close attention to where your terminal is located in relation to your destination in Dallas. Dallas has one of the most complex highway systems in the United States – navigating it can be confusing for visitors who have not yet had time to accommodate themselves to the city's urban structure.

All of Dallas' airport terminals are accessible through the International Parkway, which is a toll road. If you rent a car, you will have to pay the toll as you leave – be sure to have some cash on you.

If you choose not to rent a car, shuttle buses will take you to most hotels in the area, but be aware that the airport also has shuttle buses between parking lots – the need for extra parking means some visitors leave their cars at a Remote parking lot and take a shuttle to the airport from there.

One of the best, fastest, and easiest ways to arrive in downtown Dallas is using the DART Orange Line. DART lets passengers purchase tickets online and use them through a mobile app, making their entire service very easy to use. Additionally, a special concierge service responds to passenger concerns between the hours of 8.00 AM and 4.00 PM on weekdays.

Taking a taxi from DFW to downtown Dallas will cost about $40 – much less than the DART option. Taxi rides to North Dallas, Dallas Market Center Area, and Fair Park cost about the same. More than 30 separate taxi companies serve the Dallas/Fort Worth airport, and airport staff order taxis for newly arrived passengers 24/7.
