Known for its futuristic skyline, Frankfurt is the financial capital of Continental Europe and the transportation hub of Germany. Its skyscrapers – and the fact that it’s located along the Main River – gave it its nickname. Mainhattan. Frankfurt is a diverse city that draws millions of tourists every year and acts as a global center for everything from commerce to culture.

The Main River runs through Frankfurt and the Taunus mountains are to its northwest. Germany’s largest forest, the Frankfurt City Forest, is to the south. The city is made up of 46 districts which are subdivided further into city boroughs and electoral districts.

If you’re looking to learn about the history and culture of the city, start with a visit to the Römer. The Römer is one of the city’s most important landmarks and has been an important piece of the city for 600 years. There are several beautiful rooms where weddings often take place plus a famous balcony that has seen its fair share of famous people.

Walk through the narrow streets and past the beautiful houses and to Old Sachsenhausen where you can visit pub after pub, get a soft pretzel, and drink apple wine. This area has more working fountains than anywhere else in the city, including the Frau Rauscher fountain located in the center of Old Sachsenhausen.

There’s plenty of arts and culture available, too. A visit to Frankfurt is not complete without a stop at the Old Opera House, restored to its original glory back in 1981. You can see various acts here, from symphonies to jazz to family concerts. If museums are more your scene, take a boat ride down the Main River to see the city’s Museum Embankment. Once you disembark, head to German Film Museum, the Museum of Communication, the Museum of World Cultures, or many more.

For something a little more modern, check out the skyline that gave Frankfurt its nickname. There are 14 skyscrapers in all, including the Commerzbank Tower, the second tallest building in the EU.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Flights to Frankfurt arrive through the Frankfurt Airport, located just 7 miles outside of the city center. This airport serves 264 non-stop destinations with its four runways, and is one of the busiest airports in the EU after Heathrow in London and Charles de Gaulle in Paris. German airline Lufthansa is based here. And there are plans to expand from two main terminals to three.

Getting to and leaving the airport

The Frankfurt Airport is well connected and offers a range of transportation.

If you need to get from terminal to terminal, there’s a free SkyLine train that departs every few minutes. There are also shuttles that travel this route.

Several bus companies serve both terminals. There’s also a special bus service provided by Lufthansa that lets on passengers traveling with any airline. The service makes frequent stops and has special check-in facilities, which can be a real timesaver when you’re heading back to the airport to go home or onto the next leg of your journey.

There are also several car rental services available at both terminals as well as ride share kiosks. These kiosks are also located throughout the city and are a great option for short term rentals. For example, if you only want a car to get you from the airport to your hotel, you can use a ride share.

Some of the nearby hotels also have shuttle service for their guests. The shuttle stop is located outside of Terminal 1.

Taxis are also available 24 hours a day and can be found at both terminals.

There are other options as well. You can get a local train into Frankfurt. Regional and international trains are also available if you need them during your trip. A service called Rail&Fly is a great choice for when you’re heading back to the airport. They allow you to travel from anywhere in Germany to the airport on the day before and the day of your flight out, or the day of and the day after your flight in. 

Frankfurt Airport Facilities & Services

Frankfurt Airport is very large and very busy. Though it’s only two terminals, Terminal 1 has four concourses and Terminal 2 has two. There’s also a small third terminal for those travelers flying first-class with Lufthansa.

Wi-Fi is free and unlimited throughout the airport from 300 different hotspots.

If you’re traveling with children, there are several play areas where you can take them for entertainment.

Economy class passengers can pay to enter the lounges and there are also showers in the airport for travelers to use for a small fee.

Terminal 1, Concourse B is open 24 hours and houses a lot of 24-hour food options, including Scoom, Mondo, Quickers, Mayer’s Bar, and a Mondo Coffee bar. 24 hour options in Terminal 2 include a Quicker’s and a McDonald’s.

As far as other entertainment, there are slot machines, computer games, and internet terminals available, plus occasional lunchtime concerts held in the chapel in Terminal 1. You can even try the flight simulator supervised by an experienced pilot.
